Eye Safety

Safety Alert

Eye injuries are the most frequent form of injury suffered by ICM employees.  We take the necessary steps to provide personal protective equipment in the form of safety glasses and face shields but still are having eye injuries.  What is the reason for the injuries when the protective equipment is being used?  The two eye injuries suffered this year are the result of someone either putting on or taking off protective gear.  Dust, dirt or other forms of debris are on the protective gear and fall into the eye from above the safety glasses or drop down from the person’s eye brows.  There are a few things we as ICM employees can do to help in preventing future eye injuries.

  • Always wear the required eye protection for the job task, to include safety glasses and a face shield.
  • Prescription eye wear must have side shields.
  • Clean eye Personal Protective Equipment regularly during the work day.
  • Store your protective gear in a location where debris will not accumulate on it.
  • After operations where debris may become air born always brush off your hair and eyebrows to remove any particles that may have fallen onto them.
  • When using a grinder always direct the sparks away from co-workers, never towards where someone may be working.
  • If you get something into your eye “Don’t Rub”, flush the eye immediately.
