Hexavalent chromium is a metal particle that
occurs naturally in rock. It is mostly produced
in industrial process like welding, plating, and
similar operations.
It exists in several forms such as chromates
used in pigments in paints, pyrotechnics, dyes,
inks, and plastics. It is also found in
stainless steel, wood preservatives and in
cement.
Exposure to Hexavalent chromium and chromates is
like any other metal particles through
ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact.
According to OSHA the main industries affected
are stainless steel fabrication, manufacturers
of heavy- duty coatings and paints, and
producers of chrome based pigments.
OSHA states to limit the exposure limit to 5
micrograms or less per cubic meter of air in an
eight hour period. OSHAs limit on lead is 30
micrograms.
CCOM is capable for testing employees for any
metal particles, either for a baseline or
exposure.
Our insurance carrier has a full industrial
hygienist laboratory, and will supply the
monitoring pumps for free as long as we have the
tests run at their laboratory.
ICM uses several safety measures against metal
particles including powered air purifying
respirators.
